Katie studiert und ihr Freund Micah, mit dem sie in San Diego eine Wohnung teilt, ist freier Börsenmakler. Katie glaubt, seit Kindheitstagen von einem unsichtbaren Wesen heimgesucht zu werden. Micah will der Sache auf den Grund gehen und filmt nachts mit einer DV-Kamera in ihrem Schlafzimmer. Erst sind nur Geräusche zu hören, doch dann wird der Geist mit zunehmender Aggressivität auch sichtbar. Katie bekommt es immer mehr mit der Angst zu tun. Ein Parapsychologe rät ihnen, möglichst keinen Kontakt mit dem Geist aufzubauen.
