An einem heißen Sommertag will der arbeitslose New Yorker Sonny gemeinsam mit zwei Freunden eine Bank überfallen, um die Geschlechtsumwandlung seines Geliebten finanzieren zu können. Was als Ex-und-Hopp-Aktion geplant war, läuft gründlich schief: Sonny findet sich mit seinem Komplizen Sal, einem Haufen Geiseln und minimaler Beute in der Bank wieder, während draußen Polizei und Fernsehteams Stellung beziehen.
