Mike McDermott (Damon), además de estudiante de Derecho, es un "rounder" un excelente jugador de cartas. Cuando su mejor amigo (Norton) sale de la cárcel y descubre que sigue debiendo una importante suma de dinero a un peligroso delincuente, Mike decide volver a jugar, a pesar de que su novia se lo desaconseja. En la partida de póker con la que pretende ayudar a su amigo, participan ciertos jugadores bastante siniestros, entre ellos el pérfido Teddy KGB (Malkovich).
