Adapté du livre de Ted Huges, "The Iron Man", qui avait inventé ce récit pour consoler ses deux jeunes enfants de la disparition précoce de leur mère, la poètesse américaine Sylvia Plath, "le Géant de fer" évoque la touchante amitié d'un petit garçon et d'un robot géant venu d'une planète inconnue. Bien sûr toute la ville, puis bientôt le gouvernement et l'armée américaine vont prendre en chasse le géant et son petit ami qu'ils prennent pour les prémices d'une attaque ennemie.
