バーモントの美しい湖のほとりに建つ瀟洒な家。娘を大学へと送り出したノーマン教授と妻のクレアは二人で幸せに暮らしていた。最近隣に引っ越してきたフューアー夫妻はケンカが絶えず、心配して隣家を訪ねたクレアはフューアーの妻メアリーから「夫が恐い」と打ち明けられる。数日後、隣家からメアリーは姿を消し、それと同時にクレアの周りでは奇妙な出来事が起こりはじめる。
