Un poète russe, Gortchakov, est à la recherche d'un compatriote compositeur qui a séjourné en Italie au XVIIIe siècle. Il est accompagné dans son voyage par une jeune interprète, Eugenia. Dans un village où se trouve une piscine thermale dédiée à sainte Catherine de Sienne, il fait la rencontre d’un ermite, Domenico, qui lui confie une tâche originale.
