Rene Gallimard é um diplomada francês a serviço em Pequim. Ao assistir a uma apresentação da ópera "Madame Butterfly" de Puccini ele fica obcecado pela graça e beleza da contara Song Liling. Gallimard passa então a persegui-la por todos os lugares, envolvendo-se cada vez mais com o exótico mundo ca cultura chinesa. Quando finalmente, a força de sua paixão transforma-se em um intenso romance, ele acaba conduzindo a um jogo imprevisivel de interesses politicos e revelações que mudarão por completo sua vida.
