电影为《X》的前传，讲述了邪恶的老太太珀尔 年轻时的故事。珀尔为了获得自由，嫁给了名叫霍华德 的男子，哪知道结婚没多久，霍华德就应征入伍，上前线打仗去了。刚开始，霍华德和珀尔之间还有着书信往来，但随着时间的推移，他们断了联系。霍华德离开后，珀尔在霍华德的农场同父亲 母亲 生活在一起。每天，珀尔不仅要应付数不清的农活，还要照料瘫痪生活不能自理的父亲。能够离开农场，成为明星是珀尔最大的心愿。一天，她的妯娌米斯蒂 前来拜访，她告诉珀尔，镇子上来了人，要选拔舞蹈演员去军中表演，这是珀尔能够离开农场的唯一机会。
