Luther Heggs aspire à être un journaliste pour son petit journal de la ville. Il obtient sa chance quand l'éditeur lui demande de passer la nuit à l'hôtel Simmons qui, 20 ans auparavant, a été le site d'un assassiner-suicide désormais célèbre. le récit de Luther de sa nature, la nuit fantôme-monté dans la maison conduit Simmons à poursuivre en justice pour diffamation, mais avec l'aide de son ami Kelsey ils détermine exactement ce qui est arrivé.
